Tube Inspection

Tube Inspections Services have been carried out by Astar Group for the Oil & Gas, Marine industries for over 12 years. We specialize in Eddy Current technique for both ferrous and non-ferrous tubing.  Our line of techniques includes :

Eddy current testing is a non-contact method used to inspect non-ferromagnetic tubing. This technique is suitable for detecting and sizing metal discontinuities such as corrosion, erosion, wear, pitting, baffle cuts, wall loss, and cracks in non-ferrous materials.

Eddy current array probes has higher sensitivity and can detect circumferential and axial crack when properly applied

The ultrasonic IRIS option is used to inspect a wide range of materials including ferrous, nonferrous, and nonmetallic tubing. This technique detects and sizes wall loss resulting from corrosion, erosion, wear, pitting, cracking, and baffle cuts.

The near field testing (NFT) technology is a rapid and inexpensive solution intended specifically for fin-fan carbonsteel tubing inspection. NFT is specifically suited for the detection of internal corrosion, erosion, or pitting on the inside of carbon steel tubing.


NFA is applied on aluminium-finned carbon steel tubes and is capable of generating C-scan imaging with high-quality signals yielding a very good signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) that allow detecting circumferential and axial cracking.

The NFT probes measure lift-off or “fill factor” and convert it to amplitude-based signals (no phase analysis). Because the eddy current penetration is limited to the inner surface of the tube.

Remote field testing (RFT) is being used to successfully inspect ferromagnetic tubing such as carbon steel or ferritic stainless steel. This technology offers good sensitivity when detecting and measuring volumetric defects resulting from erosion, corrosion, wear, and baffle cuts. Olympus remote field probes and the Eddyfi Ectane are used to successfully inspect heat exchangers, feedwater heaters, and boiler tubes, around the world.

Acoustic Emission Testing (AET) is a Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) method that is used to analyse emitted sound waves caused by defects or discontinuities. These acoustic waves are induced by small deformations, corrosion or cracking, which occur prior to structure failure. It is therefore possible, with AET, to locate structural defects and to monitor the propagation and development of discontinuities.

Magnetic flux leakage (MFL) is a fast inspection technique, suitable for measuring wall loss and detecting sharp defects such as pitting, grooving, and circumferential cracks. MFL is effective for aluminum-finned carbon steel tubes because the magnetic field is almost completely unaffected by the pressence of such fins.

Battery operated, encoded crawler with 5 MHz, dry coupled wheel probe. Supplied with a 50 metre umbilical cable for access to the top of the highest storage tanks methods. The Scorpion is a rugged remote access ultrasonic (UT) crawler designed for cost effective ultrasonic inspection on ferro-magnetic structures such as storage tanks, vessels and offshore installations without the need for costly scaffolding or rope access associated with UT thickness gauging.

  • UPV test that provides crucial information about the integrity of the concrete structure and is typically used to identify the presence of voiding, cracking, honeycombing and sound concrete.
  • Schmidt rebound hammer that measures the “Q value’’ at the in-situ concrete surface which is then converted via a calibration curve to determine the indicative concrete strength about the concrete surface.
  • Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) that is used over large areas of concrete to map the internal steel reinforcement, identify voiding and/or quantify the likelihood of corrosion to the internal steel reinforcement.
  • Ultrasonic Array Pulse equipment that can detect and locate defects in reinforced concrete such as honeycombing, voiding and the depth and extent of concrete delamination. This equipment is also used for the detection of embedment’s such as pipes, tendon ducts beneath a layer of rebar.
Advanced Radiography

Radiography testing is one of the most important Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques and has a multitude of applications in the industry. Traditionally, radiography inspection is time and manpower consuming work. In addition, human inspection of cracks and damage based on film radiography is very subjective, inconsistent, and sometimes biased depending on the knowledge and skill of the Inspector.

Advanced Ultrasonic Testing

In AUT of pipeline girth welds a phased array & TOFD probes are mounted on a band strapped around the pipe adjacent to the weld and is driven around the pipe’s circumference. As the probe(s) travel around the pipe, ultrasonic data are collected from the weld and the software enables flaw sizes and positions to be displayed. AUT is replacing radiography for pipeline girth weld inspections worldwide for both onshore and Offshore.Very fast scanning speeds , to keep pace with construction, it is necessary to complete a weld inspection less than 2 mints 0f 48” dia.
